Loved book #1, and this one too. This, like all of Snellings books, is full of action, courage, challenges and mercy. Pearl, new teacher, finds acceptance out on the west; something she could never find in Chicago society. She joins Ruby, Opal and the staff of Dove House, a busy hotel and restaurant just outside the constructing town of Medora, Dakota Territory. Will these women be able to tame this corner of the Wild West? When should one fight, and when is it time to throw in the towel? As key characters learn to depend on God's guidance, less savory characters threaten what they have. Is marriage and security in the future for our heroines, some of which believe themselves unloveable? Immerse yourself in the saga centered in Little Missouri, Dakota Territory.

It was good to be back with Ruby and Opal and the rest from Dove House. I finished this book in three days. It was good to learn a little bit about Pearl before she came out west. She and Ruby both came from higher class backgrounds. The way things were going for Pearl she was moving towards being single all her life. That was until her father almost forced her to marry one of his workers. But she brought that to a close by taking a teaching position out west. Pearl came west and made fast friends with the people of Dove House. She soon felt at home with the people of Dove House. She soon had an admirer in a carpenter who came to work there. Carl and Rand even came to her aide when her father came to take her back. The girls of Dove House finally found men to take care of them all except Opal not old enough yet. Milly found Adam Stone and married him. Cimmaron found Jed Black and married him. Daisy will have Charlie. Even though Rand and Ruby fought off and on. They came to love each other even when something drastic brought it into being quicker then they thought. Even though Dove House was being sold and then it got burned down. Pearl didn't know whether a man could love her because of her scar. But Carl Heglund could and he married her. So Dove House is no longer there. Belle is no longer there as well she has been a thorn in Ruby side. Now after finishing Pearl I just ordered Opal and started it. I've enjoyed this series set in the old west learning about it through the eyes of these girls.

Pearl was used to being an obedient daughter in a wealthy family of Chicago but she found more meaning in her charity work of teaching than in the role of wife her father was forcing her to accept so she decided she should look for a teaching position instead. She found one in the Dakotah Territory and she begins her new life with lots of new experiences in the former saloon turned hotel run by Ruby - the first jewel in this series. I like the characters Lauraine Snelling creates, the drama and daily life experiences, and the way each character grows in her or his understanding of God and her or his relationship to Him. Pearl is offered many new challenges in her new life and of course this includes love along with her new relationships and new life style. This was a good read!

Read the series my friends who appreciate a great story line and continues throughout the series. I am now reading, "Opal", Book #3 and the wonderment of how an author can in all reality stay with a story for so long and not lose an audience as the characters keep evolving and more enter the stage keeping the reader interested and wondering what will be coming next. Lauraine Snelling is a brilliant author who undoubtably has done research in so many areas. I shall continue reading her books as I have established great faith in not being disappointed by her as a very talented woman. And, if this should happend, I will let you know....LOL!

I truly enjoyed RUBY, the first book in this series; so much, in fact, that I ordered and read PEARL immediately afterward. That may have been a mistake because I tired of Ruby before the book ended. Maybe if there had been some time in between, her character wouldn't have bothered me so much. I liked Pearl very much, but this book seemed to be more about Ruby than Pearl. While there was a resolution to both story lines, it seemed much too rushed, as if the author ended it just to meet her deadline. I have enjoyed other books by this author and have not been disappointed before. I do not plan to read the next book in this series.

I got this the first book in this series for free on my kindle and read it because I needed a light fiction book, something mindless. By the end of the book I was hooked on the story and had to buy the rest of the books in the series to find out what happens to the characters and story! I did not expect to get hooked because the book seemed childish in its setup and story, but I came to LOVE the story and the characters, and actually cared about what happened to them. Rather I was anxious to find out how the story continued. This series is actually really fun! If you can get into an old-west story and appreciate simple fiction. Also found the Christian themes in it to be mind-stirring at times as the characters wrestled through their situations. If you're going to read this, start at book #1, RUBY, and enjoy the whole thing!
