Review
Going Off the Grid: The How-to Book of Simple Living and Happiness by Gary Collins, MS is an intelligent self-help book for those who are thinking about, in the process of, or even just curious about living comfortably and autonomously. As Collins begins he makes it clear that there are many different ways to define what living "off the grid" means, and that his experience, while comprehensive in its application, isn't a sole and singular perception. What Collins delivers is a virtual encyclopedia of all things off the grid, covering every conceivable prerequisite to development, cost, planning, consideration, and resources for turning the dream of living autonomously into a reality.Going into this book I was unsure of what to expect. This is partly due to my narrow understanding of what living off the grid meant (which, frankly, had been thus far limited to what I'd seen in "prepper" shows), and partly due to my only real foray into the wilderness being an Alaskan cruise taken last summer. Not exactly roughing it, I know. Going Off the Grid by Gary Collins changed all of that. His straight forward and natural narrative allowed me to see something that was not only attainable, but that also sounded really, really nice. If you have any interest in living autonomously at all, even if it isn't a full time existence, I believe this all-inclusive guidebook would be a gem of a manual to help in every step of the way. There is nothing that Collins doesn't cover and his experience can save you from the pitfalls and expense that are often the true cost of living simply. - Reviewed By Jamie Michele for Readers' FavoriteGoing Off The Grid is an incredibly informative book about a fascinating topic that is growing in popularity as well as notability. I confess that Going Off The Grid has to be one of the best books in the genre today thanks to its useful and practical knowledge as well as how entertaining of a read it is. You may be thinking "how can a book about living off the grid" be entertaining but trust me when I write that it is. Firstly the incredible author Gary Collins writes beautifully so that you are entertained from start to finish, but as well as this he shares his own experiences (sometimes in a humorous way) and shares stories about his journey to living off the grid and these sections of the book were incredibly entertaining and kept me turning the pages with haste. You may be thinking that Going Off The Grid is only going to be a useful book for those that want to live entirely off the grid; however, this is not the case. Instead, Going Off The Grid can be read and loved by many, even those that do not want to live off the grid as Gary Collins provides expert and sound advice on many topics that will relate to many readers. For example, there is a section on, and this is an incredibly useful chapter for those that are either developing their own home or work as a home developer as he provides comprehensive advice on what to do and what not to do. As well as this there is a chapter on alternative sources of power and this would be an excellent chapter for those that are looking for a cleaner source of energy and once again Collins makes sure to share the pros and cons of cleaner energy so that you can make the best decision on what is right for you.Above all, however, the book is great for all readers as the premise of the book is to help you reevaluate your life and current living situations, make you realize whether you need change and ultimately help you on a path to happier living which is pretty amazing in my opinion. - Reviewed By Red Headed Book Lover I try to be impartial and not recommend specific products but I would recommend this book for anybody wanting to know realistically the trials and tribulations of figuring out how to buy land, find good contractors, and build an off-grid conventional, with all standard utilities, house in the country. -Â Aur Beck Mother Earth News Book Review

This book has a few pieces of useful knowledge, so I won't go so far as to give it one star. With that being said, there are FAR better books to be had on the subject of living off-grid. This book is written from a rather cynical point of view. The author is so negative about everything, and most of his approaches aren't necessarily what most would even consider off-grid. Going the beaten path and paying others to do your work isn't normally why people choose an off-grid lifestyle, at least not in my experience as a homesteader of almost 8 years. The author makes the homesteading life seem so complicated and stressful, and he ignores the more eco-conscious approach in almost all situations, almost laughing at those who consider conservation the best option. This book was a tense read. I wouldn't have even finished it, but I hoped for a couple useful tidbits, which is all it did end up providing.
Like the book, lots of great information, however I got the kindle version and a LOT of words are missing at the ends of paragraphs so it left me guessing at what he meant at times. I'm sure it's just a glitch from making the book digital, but it's pretty significant. I would highly recommend going with the print version instead. If the digital version gets corrected I would modify my review to 5 stars.I have attached a screens hot to demonstrate, but most of the pages are like this. It does not make it impossible to understand, but you do have to work at it.
I am looking to buy land, build a house and retire in a rural area - somewhere in the Northwest like Montana. I have bought several books so I can hear different perspectives and make sure I cover all my bases before making the plunge. I am also hoping to reduce the chance of mistake or at least minimize mistakes - and costs related to those mistakes. This is my second book to read so far. I liked that the author covered most of my points of interest (off grid power, water wells, security, and communications - like cell phone and internet). The author also covered quite a bit of other things that were not on the forefront of my interests, but equally as important - such as dealing with general contractors and financing. One thing that I thought was great about the book was that the author provided examples of price ranges. Yes...we could all get everything we want if cost was not a factor. But it is good to understand what things may cost so we can determine affordability. For example, knowing how much power is generated from solar makes you start to realize that you may have to pick and choose what appliances and gadgets you will be able to run if you need to stay within a certain price range. Otherwise, you will do without until the sun comes back out!! HahaAll in all, it was a very good book, provided some great information, introduced some good resources, and gave a very good perspective of his research and experiences. I would recommend this book to anyone starting their journey to explore living off grid.UPDATE: Now that I have read another book, I would say this one was even better than I originally posted - if that could happen. Definitely stand by my positive review. Also, what differentiated this book from the other was this one actually provided different options with a little background on them. The other one only discussed what that family was doing and the author kept repeating that the reader should do research. I will probably be re-reading this book after I read my other books.
Not a bad book by any means, and it contains a reasonable amount of information for the price. I would have liked to see illustrations for the off grid power systems and building material.
Coming from a Military Intelligence background, I found the book to not only be a great read, but very credible with sound logic and tactics to reach a goal of living off the “Grid.†Don’t get me wrong, anyone with any background can follow the instructional “how to†chapters with ease and don’t need a special military background. The author has a warm writing style that makes for a fast, fun and formative read. Truly an outstanding book!
Even though I don't plan on going off grid there is a lot of usable info specifically for planning improvements to a homestead. I appreciate the authors candor in describing his trials while building his property.
Gary Collins did a great job of introducing several topics with basic and general overviews of each of those topics. Several times I was like...But now what! And in his Gary style, he address those questions with different resources and websites to gain more in site.
I enjoyed reading most of this book, and found it relatable having spent the last few months reevaluating how I want to live my life. The author does rant here and there, and the writing can be awfully casual -- but it didn't bother me too much. Still a good read if this is something you've considered for yourself.
