About the Author
Adrian Tomine is the author of Scenes from an Impending Marriage, Shortcomings, Summer Blonde, Sleepwalk, 32 Stories, and the comic book series Optic Nerve. He is also an illustrator for The New Yorker, Esquire, and Rolling Stone, and his stories have appeared in The Best American Nonrequired Reading and An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Tomine lives in Brooklyn, New York.

I was not aware, when I ordered this, that it was a collection of older work. It doesn’t matter, as most of this is new to me and it’s a strong collection of short pieces. Vivid characters and haunting stories (along with the excellent art that is Tomine’s trademark) in a high quality paperback volume.
"Disparate" is really the only word one could use to describe Tomine's writing style. His depictions of the inner pains that many of us know, especially from our late teens and early twenties, are almost painful to read with all of the insecurities that they bring flooding back. This angst ridden collection of stories is the collected works of his first eight editions of the comic book "Optic Nerve" which Tomine produces yearly.Sleepwalker is an excellent introduction to his work, where as his other trade paper back "32 stories" is a collection of his earliest work and while some of the stories are very amusing, it's also very raw, and out of the normal vein of work Tomine is known for.
OK, so I think I get it now. The illustrations, the storytelling, the open-ended conclusions, that's just his style. I guess I can, in some way, respect that. However, I cannot actually say that I like it.I didn't hate it as much as I did Shortcomings, maybe because I went into it with much lower expectations. The stories seemed random, and uninteresting. The characters seemed boring and in no way engaging or compelling. There were some stories that were OK, but a lot of the stories I was just like...huh?I did appreciate the illustrations more in this book, the expressions, the lines, the shadowing, were all way better - in my humble opinion - than Shortcomings.In short though, not my style. I wouldn't be reading for Adrian Tomine again.
Adrian Tomine's exquisitely realized art offers poignant observations and perhaps a subtle reminder to be kinder to one another. It's rough out there.
Good, but not as good as some of his other work.
perfect read, great stories
I actually ended up giving this to a friend as an impromptu birthday present before I had a chance to read it, and she seems to be pleased with it. Now I need to get another so I can actually read it. Thrilled with Shortcomings, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this as well.
