This book is delightful to read as the authors take us into Bob Mould’s album as an exploration of identity and growth. Along the way we get insights into the authors own journey of growing up and becoming adults and parents. This book reminds us just how powerful music is and how most of us particular albums and songs that guided us as we figured out just how and where we fit in the world. Of course that journey never ends. This book leaves you wanting to return not only to Workbook but to all the albums that were part of your own story.
This work brought me back to when the album first came out- the authors describe in detail other relevant music and then go much further. What was most enjoyable was the back and forth between the two- it made me want to know more more of what was going on in the lives of the authors. More info would give the reader personal context to the time period and to the reason why this album resonates so strongly for them.
One of my favorite albums. Although, I wish I'd thought of this idea first; I could have written my own version. This conversation was fun to witness.
Uh, no. Two dude-bros writing letters to each other about how they love this album. Interesting idea, but it sucks for the rest of us. Y'all go on with yourselves, but I'm not interested in learning about your mutual masturbation over this album. I'm interested in the making of this album. This books is NOT that.
Whether you have been following Bob Mould for years, are a Husker Du fan who lost track of the front man when the band split up, or are just curious about artists facing a pivotal point in their personal and professional life, this book has much to offer.Biggins and Couch know their stuff when it comes to indy/alternative music and their insights, along with those shared by Bob and his collaborators, gave me a much greater understanding of and appreciation for Workbook and Bob's music in general. That the authors didn't share the same enthusiasm for the album-at least not at first-made it all the more engaging. Over the course of their conversations, they debate Workbook's strengths and weaknesses, sometimes coming around to the other's point of view, and sometimes not. And while the behind-the-scenes look at the making of Workbook was interesting enough, the parts I found most meaningful were when the authors discussed how the album's themes have been reflected in their own lives, which prompted me to do the same.
There just isn't 100 pages of material to discuss. They wouldn't publish a 25 page book so the reader has to wade through pages and pages of letters between the two authors. While these letters do contain useful nuggets of information and some insight, it is far from a must-read. The most revealing information comes from interviews with cellist Jane Scarpantoni. If you are considering this, read See a Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody and Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991 first. And you already have Workbook 25, right? The liner notes there are pretty detailed.
Love it, love it, LOVE IT!!!
