This book is a great follow-up to the first book. It is quick, fun read, and you should definitely buy it if you enjoyed the first one. I enjoyed the mix of serious and fun, it has a nice down-to-earth approach to the rather silly topics. I gave it 4 stars not because there was anything wrong with it, but because 5 stars takes something special. I'm glad the author didn't try for that, this book did what it intended to do perfectly.
After reading the first novel of the series, I was excited to continue with Magic 2.0's Spell or High Water. For the most part, I did enjoy the book - it was a fun, relaxing read that didn't require a lot of attention or effort to read, which for a grad student is the nicest of breaks.I was disappointed, though, by the resolutions of the different plots presented in this novel. Everything came together to quickly and neatly compared to the build-up which was the majority of the book. That being said, though, I don't think there could have truly been any better conclusions. The epilogues were also really cute and well worth getting through the rest of the book.I will be going on to read the next installment of the series. Magic 2.0 is really a fun and light-hearted series to get into when you just need a light read and a little break from everything else, and I totally recommend that for anyone.
A solid follow up to Off to be the Wizard. Very comfortable and quite amusing, some of the gags / punch lines are telegraphed but (IMO) that goes with having your characters somewhat frozen in their maturity levels (geek mode). It should be noted that both the romantic situations and violence are softened and indirect (a PG-13 feel throughout) which I found "charming". While there are some humorously presented deep thought issues (Free will, the nature of knowledge etc.) they do not become a distraction. The two major plotlines are presented much more intelligently than (IMO) book one.
It's been awhile since I read the first book, and--honestly--I'd all but forgotten that I own both books two and three in the series. So when I stumbled upon this the other day, I went, "Oh yeah... the first one was fun. This should be good." And I gave it a go.Honestly, my assessment was spot on. This book is fun. It's good. I laughed and grinned and generally enjoyed myself throughout the story. Even more, the time travel elements are done well--and are used to pose some interesting questions. That being said, the story isn't much more than that, at least not for me. There is some light social commentary mixed in and some plot elements that, at times, feel unnecessary, but in the end, it's amusing. And if that's what you're looking for, some light fantasy fun, then this is a great book to fit that bill.
I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the first in the series: Off To Be The Wizard. It's still full of fun (and confusing at times) time travel, pop culture references, a bit of computer jargon, and a healthy helping of humor. The side plot that takes place in the future (aka modern day) is actually what I felt to be the most intriguing bit of this book. The other story lines feel a bit flat to me by comparison. Especially the romantic relationships, which feel forced. That being said, the "Who Dunnit" kind of plot is quite entertaining when the "victim" is an invulnerable time wizard against whom all attempts appear to fail miserably. If you enjoyed the first book, certainly give this one a read. Book three "An Unwelcome Quest" is the best of the series in my opinion.
This continues the series in which the protagonist discovers that the world is just a computer program. He and other hackers have discovered the master file, and by playing with that can control reality. They give themselves magical powers like the wizards old. This all fits together and works very well. In the second book in the series, they visit Atlantis and have another set of adventures. Once again, the plot is interesting and the characters are engaging. There is enough plot development and new puzzles to keep the reader interested. Once again, I enjoyed it and I’m giving it five stars.
If your life needs more books that are funny, then look no further than the Magic 2.0 series from Mr. Meyer. The second book in the series continues right after the events in the closing chapters of the first. Wizards Phillip and Martin are going to a convention of Time Travelers in Atlantis, which will put them right in the middle of the most confusing time travel plot I've ever seen in a book: "The Brits". Seriously, you have to read it to believe it. My head still hurts from that ultra-complicated stuff.Even if you don't get it, or you don't like it, you will enjoy Mr. Meyer's humor. It's a geek sort of humor but it is very well paced and sometimes hilarious. All the characters are well developed and you will even feel compelled to like the main antagonist: Jimmy. It's hard to imagine what this guy has gone through to get his new chance. The minor characters (the FBI guys, the Atlanteans) are also funny to read and I suspect they'll play a major role in the third book.As for the not-so-good parts of the book, I have to say that the final chapters, especially the final "sorcerer duel" in Atlantis were too long and repetitive. That took away from the enjoyment of the book. And as I've said before: "The Brits" - Good lord is that complicated! Finally, I didn't really enjoy the destiny that Jimmy has to face (sometimes good guys can be pricks), but I suppose that I'll get to know more about that when I read the third book later this year.Pick these up. They are worth it, if only for the laughs!
