I loved the first FAT ANGIE book, and the sequel is even better. Angie has a lot of challenges -- way more than most people -- but the humor in the book keeps them from being unduly depressing. Readers will cheer Angie on as she stands up for herself and follows her sister's last wishes in a way that works for her.
Many sequels disappoint. This does not. There’s nothing forced or incoherent about the continued journey of self discovery on which we find Angie at the beginning of #2. Self actualization is not a one-off event. Not as a teen nor as an adult. Bigotry is still the pervasive world view in which we find Angie as the novel opens. Her romance with KC is over, her soldier sister’s dead, her mom’s still an a-hole, the school bullies haven’t turned into angels, and the new shrink is not quite connecting the dots yet.Angie’s story arc feels so earned. Her struggle with: shame, guilt, embarrassment, loss, fear all feels messy, palpable and authentic. This isn’t a pretty story; it’s a gutsy genuine story that teens of all sizes and struggles will relate to. So often we are encouraged to write “mighty girl†stories with sheros we can emulate. Angie is not that typical snarky female protagonist. Her mental health and self-image struggles are real and her vulnerability spills over the pages. But the reality is this is what life is like for many teen girls… a daily struggle, with small victories, and constant failures. We need to see protagonists like these who make it through to the end of the book not as triumphant wonder women but as girls growing in self-love and self-expression.This novel packs some awesome representation. It celebrates queerness (including non binary), body-acceptance, and the de-stigmatization of mental health problems. This is the follow up I had hoped it would be. As a Brit, I love the word-play, and I am a sucker for great road trips. The new characters are off-the-charts awesome and, you know how sometimes you feel like a YA is written for an adult audience? Well, not here. While there are some dark moments, this book maintains an undercurrent of hope for the reader. And the ending is not a happy-ever-after wrap up, but it’s exactly what this Rebel Girl needs
Angie is miserable and the sophomore year just began. Her girlfriend, KC, recently moved away to spend time with her father in Texas. Her best friend, Jake has been distant and flaky. And Greg, her bully, has become increasingly violent towards Angie. Her sister had an over the top funeral with a statue dedicated to her. Her mother, Connie, placed a symbolic urn on their mantel to mourn her daughter's death. All of this just adds to the sadness Angie is feeling. During her sister's ceremony, a visiting soldier gave Angie a letter from her sister. The letter was a list of places she wanted the two of them to visit together when they got home from the war.After an incident at school, her mother threatens to send Angie to a treatment center. Angie decides to enlist a childhood friend along with her schoolmates to tackle the list her sister left. Together they travel across the state to cross off items from her sister's list. Will this list be what Angie needs to finally let her sister go and find herself?I thought the portions of the book where Angie and her friends travel to different landmarks to be interesting. It was nice to see someone be supportive and caring towards Angie after having to deal with hostility at home and at school. The book was a bit " raw" to me in the sense, that it was very graphic and had violence towards people who didn't fit the "standard mold". However, it was nice seeing some characters getting their chance of redemption.
I received an ARC of this book for free from the publisher (Candlewick Press) in exchange for an honest review.I give this book 3.5 stars which rounds up to 4.First off, I just want to put out a trigger warning since this book deals with a lot of serious topics such as fat shaming, bullying, grief, homophobia, and self-harm.This book is the sequel to Fat Angie, and going into this book I did not know that. I had thought it was a standalone book. Even though I did not read the first book, I was still able to understand what was happening in this book. There were a few things that I was confused about in the beginning, but I managed to figure it out.I liked the plot of the book, particularly the road trip aspect. The reason why I wanted to read this book was because it was about an RV road trip. I’m an RVer so that appealed to me. The best parts of the book involved the road trip. The beginning of the book is really heavy subject-wise, so the road trip came at the perfect time.However, the execution of the book wasn’t great. The writing style wasn’t my favorite. It was a bit awkward and clunky at times. I wished it flowed more smoothly.Overall, I enjoyed the story despite some flaws in the execution.
Humorous ~ Important ~ Quirkytl;dr: High school sucks, but it sucks harder when you are noticeably different.Charlton=Trujillo's Angie has it hard. She has had mental health issues. Her mom is really not doing a good job supporting her daughter. Being overweight and queer makes her a target. But, she also has important strengths. She is resilient and intelligent. This teen tale is a wonderful suprise, as the author is new to me. The book has a great voice, one that feels authentically teen. The book doesn't shy away from body image, mental health, and bullying. The best part of this book is that it is about learning to be okay with being you.
