Review
"Sure to be controversial."―Fortune"Informative, provocative, and entertaining reading for those interested in political economy and U.S. social and economic history."―Booklist"Gibney lays into the 'Me' generation for cashing out their children's future and leaving the planet looking like a rock star's hotel room.... Timely."―Esquire"A Generation of Sociopaths is a polemic, but what a polemic: filled with data, rich in anecdote, deadly serious yet wickedly funny."―Alexandra Wolfe, author of Valley of the Gods"The core of Gibney's argument, that the boomers are guilty of 'generational plunder,' is spot-on. He accuses them of 'the mass, democratically-sanctioned transfer of wealth away from the young and toward the Boomers,' and he's right."―Dana Milbank, Washington Post"Remarkable .... Impressively weighted with hard numbers and specifics, the volume serves as both an indictment of and rebuttal to a Woodstock Generation that has gleefully celebrated themselves for decades while gradually running the country into the ground ... Gibney paints a persuasive and frequently hilarious portrait of the Me Generation."―Men's Journal"Like Thomas Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Bruce Cannon Gibney's A Generation of Sociopaths proceeds from a deceptively simple premise: that the gains made by the American middle class in the period after the world wars of the previous century were a fluke.... A damning, searingly relevant indictment."―The Globe and Mail"[Gibney] has a wry, amusing style and plenty of well parsed statistics to back him up ... Read A Generation of Sociopaths and hope for the best. Gibney is more optimistic than those who predict an imminent third world war, than the scientists who warn of sudden climate shifts and the end of antibiotics, and even - in one sense - than the evangelicals who believe in the Rapture. He also has a better sense of humor."―Jane Smiley, The Guardian"[Gibney] maintains that the Boomer Generation, privilege incarnate, exhibit all the traits associated with that clinical pathology: 'deceit, selfishness, imprudence, remorselessness, hostility, the works.' He argues the case well."―Toronto Star

In "A Generation of Sociopaths: How the Baby Boomers Betrayed America", Bruce Cannon Gibney presents an economic history from the postwar years to the present that explores the social developments that linked a generation and how, more than any right or left divide, the generational bonds shared by Boomers characterize their political policies. He writes, "The central theme of this book is that America's present dilemma resulted substantially and directly from choices made by the Baby Boomers. Their collective, pathological self-interest derailed a long train of progress, while exacerbating and ignoring existential threats like climate change. The Boomers' sociopathic need for instant gratification pushed them to equally sociopathic policies, causing them to fritter away an enormous inheritance, and when that was exhausted, to mortgage the future" (pg. xxvi). Gibney uses the DSM-V for his definitions before drawing upon a close reading of economic policies over the past forty years that undid much of the work of the Greatest and Silent Generations to save for the future and invest in prosperity in favor of immediate gains. These careful examinations can get a little bogged down in the details and statistics at times, but they help to illustrate the larger points. Rather than simply castigate the Boomers, Gibney does offer a way forward. He concludes, "The goals of this cultural reorientation are straightforward. The first is to provide a foundation for unity against the Boomer agenda, and to do it quickly... The second is to remember that the anti-anti-social agenda is, at heart, a prosocial agenda, one that strengthens the ideals of a commonwealth" (pg. 356). It is not yet too late to undo Boomer malfeasance, but the deadline is fast approaching.
A book every boomer should fear (they do, just look at all the BS reviews from Boomers who didn't read the book). For Generation X this book will confirm in factual detail everything you've suspected since you were 7. For Millennial's just waking up to reality, this book will be a primer for the rest of your political lives.
I doubt this book will ever get 5 stars from the controversy it creates. But if its rating hangs around 3 stars, take that as a sign this book has made a solid point and touched a nerve, and why it should be taken seriously. There is a lot of truth in this book, and a lot of people are not going to like having to face that truth. The result is a book that needs to be taken seriously. I put this book up with "What's the Matter with Kansas?: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America" by Thomas Frank in understanding the current political state in America. Gibney sets forth a pretty good argument and backs it up with some pretty solid evidence. The result, is that despite the frustration I still feel about the current state of America and how we got here, this books offers a little relief by providing a pretty good reason why.Of course, the people which should read it most, the Boomers, will probably ignore and/or deride it without really digging into it. As Gibney points out, that is the Ggneration which gave us a world of Truthiness and Alternative-Facts when they don't agree with reality. But if you want to understand the politics in 2017 America, this is probably your best starting point.
"Apres moi le deluge" (After me, the flood) seems to be the motto of the Boomer generation. In the case of climate change; this may be literal.Bruce Gibney does an excellent job defending the title. He shows how Boomers inherited a fantastically wealthy country, and have, through a whole variety of methods, looted the patrimony left to them, and now expect to suck on Social Security and Medicare until they die, leaving behind misery. He points out, with carefully researched data, exactly how the Boomers did this, what institutions they have corrupted, and the nasty hangover that awaits the country because of them.If you are under 50, especially if you are WELL under 50 (in your teens even); do yourself a favor and read this book. Learn who you are up against.
So, to clarify - the author is clear that he is not saying that each and every member of the Baby Boom generation is a sociopath. But on the whole, since its very inception, the behavior of the generation as a whole has been and continues to be textbook sociopathy (what textbook? The DSM!). Gibney lays out what made the Boomers different from every generation before or since them, and demonstrates how they inherited prosperity unequaled in human history . . . and squandered it. Then, when it was gone, they started spending the patrimony of their children and grandchildren, and despoiled the very planet to the point where it may be past saving, so that they have endangered the very future of the entire human race. Possible remedies, mostly for the financial situation of the United States, are proposed, but it is noted that the Boomers still have enough sway to make it difficult to implement the solutions until it is too late to save anybody. A timely book for everyone who is looking around and wondering, "WHAT HAPPENED?" The answer: the Baby Boom happened. And this is the story of exactly how we got to be where we are now.
